The aha moment was discovering hat-brim wire. It's a plastic wiry stuff which is flexible to a point, but tends to retain a curved shape. This was probably the most costly bit of the whole project, I spent about £15 on 11 meters of it.

I cut it into lengths after measuring the tracksuit pants and top and then taped into loops with gaffer tape as shown.
